No no, that was the papiermark. Apparently one reichsmark was equivalent to 10^12 papiermarks.

one reichsmark was about 4.2 dollars, don’t know how much that is in today’s dollars.

Apparently 1/4 of the car needs to be fixed/changed.

Depending on year and adjusting for inflation, that would make it about $72 in today’s money. My guess is $1.08 million.

Most of that is Dealership Bullshit though, they want to change the discs together with the pads because “it’s better to change them together”

At 31k miles discs really do not need to be changed unless something has been causing excess wear, as you probably know.

My 52k mile twingo is on its original pads and discs with loads of life left in both. Engine braking is usually sufficient to slow the car right down so they dont get used heavily.

The discs are fine, they just found every single possible way to milk money out of that service.

They probably looked at my face and thought I looked like an idiot.

They want to change all the discs, several suspension related sensors and actuators that “might not be working properly” and some other dealership bullshit.

I’m just going to pay for the gearbox thing, the real 31k service (pads, fluids and the usual) and two engine bushings/mounts that are a bit cracked.

Yes, I love showing off my non functioning 10-6 year old cars. I’m that wealthy.

And the correct term is humble-bragging, I do a lot of that.

Once I had a 560 SEL that I bought for $1200, and I took it to my local MB dealer because I needed a radio code. They gave the car a look over while it was in and gave me an estimate for “a few other things” they recommended doing.

The estimate was $11,000.

You win.

This is basically what they did to me, but on a 6 year old car.

That’s still a crazy price on a 31k service. At least my 560 a) was an $80k car new and b) had 100k miles.

I mean, they just added everything that wasn’t 100% to the estimate. New discs all around, new suspension sensors that “might not be working as expected but not broken” plus 1k in work/hour.

I apologize if I have bothered you in any way.

I understand I’m in a position of privilege but those are things that interest me, I love watches and mechanical things. I bought these with money that I earned with hard work.

If I seem to be showing off it’s because I’m either proud of myself or I like the thing I got and want to share it with you, OPPO has lots of watch/furniture/bikes/architecture aficionados because those are things that go hand in hand with car culture.

I took my ‘09 Accent in to the dealer because the front left wheel has a wheels-speed-related grindy-clunk coming from it under heavy braking. They never did really tell me what was wrong when they looked it over, but they said the entire brake system needed service for $500 plus tax when the pads and rotors are still fine.

Dealerships are only good for warranty repairs, basic mile interval services and buying cars.

Serious maintenance should always be done at indie shops.

I question some of the indie shops around here, sadly...the one I prefer is 30 mins away and I am rarely that way now. I work 4 jobs, so to find the time to get there for a service doesn’t work for me as the closer jobs are much easier to drop my car off and get to work.

The last indie shop I had touch my car was asked to simply remove broken (spinning in place when trying to tighten) license plate screw mounts (unfortunately the dealer that put them on for me when I bought the car used security screws) on the rear hatch of my car and the indie shop took an angle grinder to the screws to get them off and was LESS than careful, digging right into my paint...I dabbed a crap-ton of touchup pain into each gash to prevent rust and it seems to have worked, but it looks terrible close up (pardon the dirt....I live on a gravel road with a gravel driveway)

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Sadly, this was a supposedly recommended shop too...I’ve heard bad things about all the other local shops, so I don’t know which to try...

Couldn’t do anything about it either re: the damages...they never charged me for it, and I just glanced around the rear of the car to see if there were, indeed, new screws there when I picked the car up, which there were. Didn’t notice the damage until I got home but couldn’t do anything because I had no paper evidience they ever worked on my car...

...Lesson learned.

EDIT - Not saying I distrust all indie shops btw, just not sure who to trust around here...
